NEWPORT BEACH COSTA MESA : Schools OK New Rules for Immunizations

Share

New rules for student immunizations have been adopted by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

Youngsters must show proof of having received state-mandated health assessments within six months of starting kindergarten or within 18 months of starting first grade.

Students must show proof of immunizations--signed by the administering physician--for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles and rubella. Parents must provide documentation of mumps immunization for children 6 and younger.

Immunization for measles, rubella and mumps may be replaced with a physician’s statement that the child has had the disease. The regulations were passed to conform with the state Child Health and Disability Prevention statute.

Board members questioned the breadth of a provision in the policy that lets parents sign waivers exempting their children from immunizations for religious or “personal” reasons.

The school board also is considering rules on tuberculosis testing. That topic will be discussed at Tuesday’s session.
