ANAHEIM — A man wanted by the FBI as a suspect in a Texas bank robbery in which a live hand grenade was used was arrested in Anaheim on Friday after a patrol officer checked the registration of the car he was driving “on a whim.”
Casey James Harvey, 33, was arrested at 10:30 a.m. as he started to drive away from a Disneyland-area motel, Sgt. Ronald L. Good said.
Officer Chris Pena was checking a number of license plates in the motel parking lot on a whim, according to his supervisor. He found that one of the cars had been reported stolen in a strong-arm robbery of an elderly woman in La Mesa in San Diego County on Feb. 21.
Pena called for backup support and Harvey was arrested.
Harvey is a suspect in a bank robbery in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton on July 15, according to an FBI warrant. The robber carried a Korean War-era grenade, which later turned out to be live, and demanded cash, the warrant said. As he drove away with $37,000, he tossed the grenade out his window. The grenade broke in two but did not explode. Local police and federal agents closed off the street for 2 1/2 hours, until the grenade fragments were removed.
The FBI warrant said that Harvey was last seen traveling in a rental car with a topless dancer.
Harvey was booked at the Anaheim Police jail pending further investigation.
