THE PREPS : BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Cuevas, Downing Power El Dorado

Trent Cuevas had a three-run double and Brandon Downing hit a two-run homer as second-ranked El Dorado scored nine runs in the second inning and went on to a 10-1 victory over Loara in an Empire League baseball game Friday at El Dorado.

Don Jamieson (6-0) pitched six innings, giving up only one hit with three strikeouts and three walks for the Golden Hawks (10-2, 4-1 in league).

In other Empire League games:

Kennedy 6, Century 1--Brad Sabol (4-1) went the distance, giving up two hits and striking out 10. Richard Sundstrom was three for three with one run scored and Mike Clark and Nick Papanic each were two for three to lead Kennedy (8-4, 3-2). Century is 0-5 in league.

Katella 13, Cypress 11--Chris Stockstill was four for four with two doubles, two runs batted in, four runs scored and improved his record to 4-1 with five strikeouts to lead Katella (7-5, 3-2). Bryan Flanigan was two for four with a home run and five RBIs for Cypress (5-5, 2-3).

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 10, St. Margaret’s 0 (6, mercy)--Ray Cook was three for three with a triple and four RBIs and pitched a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for Liberty Christian (5-4, 1-0).

In the Century League:

Canyon 12, Foothill 3--Eric Valent was three for three with three runs scored. Chad Baum was three for four with three RBIs and Jeff Leuenberger threw a four-hitter for ninth-ranked Canyon (7-3, 2-2).

Villa Park 11, Santa Ana Valley 8--Sean McMahon tripled twice, doubled, singled, drove in six runs and scored three for Villa Park (6-5, 1-3).

Orange 13, El Modena 5--David Matranga was three for four with two doubles and three runs scored as Orange (5-4, 4-0) remained undefeated in league play.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 6, Santiago 2--Craig Kuzmic went three for three, scored once and had an RBI triple, and teammate Jon Gibson was two for three with a run scored and an RBI for seventh-ranked La Quinta.

It was La Quinta’s 37th straight game at home without a loss. The streak includes a tie.

Pacifica 4, Bolsa Grande 2--Jeff Barndollar had first-inning home run and an RBI double in the fourth for host Pacifica (6-5, 3-1).

Los Amigos 8, Garden Grove 6--Cesar Garcia had two hits, including a two-run homer in the second, and drove in three runs for host Los Amigos (2-8, 1-2). Gilbert Contreras had three hits and drove in two runs also for Los Amigos.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 14, Saddleback 3--Jesus Rodarte was three for four with two triples, four RBIs and four runs scored for Santa Ana (6-5, 3-2). Eddie Mejia had a home run in the fifth for Saddleback (4-7, 1-2).

Tustin 2, Servite 1--Kevin Timone tripled and scored in the second and Rick Gonzalez knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth for Tustin (8-2-1, 4-1).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 12, Whittier Christian 5--Adam Cavaness (5-0) pitched his fifth complete game and Dan Young scored three runs for Orange Lutheran (6-5, 4-2).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 5, Brea Olinda 1--Joe Secoda came in with the bases loaded and two outs and got Ryan Kunth to ground out to end the game for visiting Valencia (4-3, 3-2). It was Secoda’s second save. Eric Reynosa had three hits and scored a run and Justin Averitt had two hits, including a double and scored two runs for Valencia.

Western 4, Savanna 1--Bret Halbert pitched a five-hitter for Western (4-8, 2-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 8, Aliso Niguel 7--Julius Vasquez doubled in Mike Adelmund with two out in the top of the seventh inning for the winning run for Costa Mesa (5-4, 3-1). Teammate Jeremy Starns hit a two-out, two-run homer in seventh to tie it, 7-7.

Laguna Hills 7, University 3--Cesar Reyes was two for three with two doubles and two RBIs and Tony Milo hit a two-run homer for Laguna Hills (7-3, 3-1).

In the South Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 12, Capistrano Valley 2--Shortstop Nick Punto was two for three with three RBIs and Tom Kilby was four for five. Jake Anderson was four for five, including a two-run homer, with five RBIs for Trabuco Hills (5-3-1, 4-1).

San Clemente 6, Mission Viejo 5--With the tying run on second base in the seventh inning, starter Robert Frith got a double play to give San Clemente (7-4, 3-2) a victory. Frith also hit his second home run of the season.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 4, Edison 3--Justin Lynch pitched a five-hitter to lead sixth-ranked Marina (9-2, 4-1). Tim Humble had two hits and two RBIs for the Vikings.

Los Alamitos 8, Huntington Beach 6--Curtis McGaughey was two for two with two runs scored and an RBI. Brad Cresse was two for two with one run scored and an RBI to lead Los Alamitos (5-6, 2-3).
