COLLEGE TENNIS : UCI/MARRIOTT CLASSIC : Irvine Upsets Fresno State to Set Up Rematch

IRVINE — UC Irvine, ranked 37th in the nation, upset No. 28 Fresno State, 4-3, in one semifinal of the UCI/Marriott Tennis Classic Friday at the UCI Tennis Stadium.
Irvine’s victory set up a rematch of last year’s final. The Anteaters take on 11th-ranked Southern Alabama at 1 p.m. today for the championship. UC Irvine beat South Alabama, 4-3, in the final last year.
Against Fresno, Irvine got its points with victories at No. 2 through No. 5 singles.
Marc-Andre Tardif won, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 singles and Fred Bach won, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 3 for UC Irvine. Julian Foxon won, 6-0, 6-2, and Kenny Cruz won, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, also for the Anteaters.
Fresno State came back to sweep in all three doubles.
South Alabama beat Arkansas Little Rock, 5-2, in the other semifinal.
Arkansas Little Rock plays Fresno State for third place at 9 a.m. The fifth-place match between Boise State and Southwestern Louisiana is also at 9 a.m. Both are at the UCI Tennis Stadium.
