A man trying to mug several people was shot and killed late Friday during a fierce struggle with his intended victims, police said Saturday.

Sgt. Dick Faust said two men, including Miguel Solis, 20, pulled a handgun on several people about 11 p.m. in the 1800 block of South Cedar Street in an attempt to rob them.

As Solis and his partner took the victims’ money, one of the victims lunged at Solis and struggled for the gun.

“Then several victims jumped in to help with the struggle,” Faust said, “when one round was fired from the gun.”

Solis, shot once in the chest, got in a car and tried to drive away. But he lost control of the wheel and crashed into a parked car half a block away, Faust said.

He died a short time later.

The second robber fled and remained at large. No arrests were made.

In another fatal shooting on Friday, Felix Poot Balam, 48, was killed about 8 p.m. during a dispute over a blocked garage outside his Santa Ana apartment.

Balam apparently returned home in the 1100 block of West Walnut Street after shopping at a store and found cars blocking his garage because of a nearby party, officials said.

Officials said Balam was not able to park his bicycle and an argument began. Witnesses heard arguing, then about eight shots.

Balam, shot several times, was found dead. A man was seen running from the scene, but police said they had no suspects in the case.
