South Alabama Captures Title at UC Irvine Tennis Classic
Eleventh-ranked South Alabama defeated host UC Irvine, 5-2, in the championship match of the 16th UCI/Marriott Tennis Classic Saturday at UC Irvine.
For the Jaguars, the tournament’s top-seeded team, Nic Chisholm, their No. 4 singles player, and No. 6 Jaco Keyser each picked up three-set victories to claim the title.
For the Anteaters (10-7), ranked 37th in the nation, sophomore Marc-Andre Tardiff defeated Klas Petterson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, for UCI’s only singles victory.
UCI’s No. 1 doubles team of Chris Tontz and Fred Bach, ranked 34th in the nation, defeated 24th-ranked Jan Hermansson and Chrisholm, 8-4.
South Alabama avenged last year’s tournament championship loss when UC Irvine defeated the Jaguars, 4-3.
In the third-place match, Fresno State defeated Arkansas Little Rock, 5-2.
