COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach State Rallies for Victory

Long Beach State, after losing a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning, scored four runs in the 10th inning Saturday for a 9-5 Big West Conference victory over New Mexico State.

All-American Scott Rivette struck out eight and faced the minimum number of batters through six innings. With the score tied, 5-5, the Aggies (25-23, 2-4) had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth. But a double-play ended the Aggies’ at-bat.

The 49ers (18-11, 4-0) loaded the bases with one out in the 10th. Jason Minici singled, driving in Jeff Liefer and Mike Stembridge’s ground-rule double to left-center drove in Jason Hodges and Nic Frank. With the bases loaded, Will Skett was hit by a pitch to force in Minici.

In another Big West Conference game:

Cal State Fullerton 10, UC Santa Barbara 8 (10)--Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to win.

Mark Kotsay was three for five, including his ninth home run of the season for the Titans (28-5, 4-1).

Brian Loyd, Tony Martinez and Robert Matos also hit home runs for Fullerton.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Azusa Pacific 4-7, Concordia 1-5--Jon Chaparro was six for nine on the day and Brian Hagerty and Rueben Niebla each pitched complete games to lead visiting Azusa Pacific to a sweep. Derek Bly hit a home run in the ninth inning of Game 1 for Concordia (12-20, 5-11).

In nonconference baseball:

Pomona Pitzer 10, Chapman 6--Donny Disbro had two hits, including a double and an RBI in the loss for Chapman (7-16).

In Big West Conference softball:

CS Fullerton 3-2, New Mexico State 2-1--Beth Queypo singled in the top of the sixth and later scored on an error by shortstop Karyn Grantz, giving the Titans (23-8, 4-2) their second victory of the day. In the first game, pitcher Brandi Isgar had both RBIs for Fullerton in the 2-1 victory.

San Jose State 3-0, Long Beach State 2-1--Christy Tucker pitched a two-hit shutout for Long Beach State in the second game of a doubleheader. The 49ers (20-17) scored the game’s only run in the top of the first inning, when Kristyn Frady singled home Amanda Favorite.

San Jose State (17-21) won the first game when Victoria Ruelas singled to score Valeri Quintero in the top of the eight inning.

Southern California College 4-3, Cal Baptist 3-2--Shannon Saylor had 11 strikeouts in the first game, five in the second to lead SCC to a doubleheader sweep. Angela Wolf was three for seven on the day, including a double and triple and two RBIs and Shannon O’Rourke went three for five with three walks and one RBI for the Vanguards (24-13, 6-2). SCC won game two in the ninth inning when, due to international rules, O’Rourke was placed on second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a squeeze play by Shannon Caruso.

In the Cal State Hayward tournament:

Chapman defeats Chico State and Colorado Colorado Springs--The Panthers took both tournament games, beating Chico State, 2-1 and Colorado Colorado Springs, 4-1. Christy Guidorizzi (15-2) went the distance with three strikeouts against Chico State. Lisa Cancilla went three for five on the day with a double and a triple and Jenny Martinez four for six with two runs scored to lead the Panthers (26-3).

In men’s track and field:

Orloff wins pole vault--UC Irvine’s Borya Orloff won the pole vault for the fourth consecutive time as UC Irvine finished fifth in a five-way meet at UC Irvine. Orloff cleared a height of 16-8 3/4, 6 3/4 inches more than his nearest competitors.

Irvine’s David Mayeda finished second in the 400 hurdles at 52.42 seconds.

The Anteaters finished 118 points behind first-place Stanford (257) with 139 points.

In women’s track and field:

UC Irvine finishes third--Skye Green finished second with a time of 1:03.47 in the 400 hurdles as UC Irvine (98) placed third.
