Jeremy Roenick, the Chicago Blackhawks’ top player and emotional leader, was skating at full speed when, an instant later, he was writhing in pain and sobbing in agony.

Roenick’s left knee collided with the left knee of Dallas defenseman Derian Hatcher with a minute left in the second period of a 2-1 loss to Dallas on Sunday at Chicago.

Roenick tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

Chicago Coach Darryl Sutter was upset that Hatcher wasn’t assessed a major penalty and game misconduct.

“I just got a memo about it (from the NHL), saying how they were going to clamp down on it,” Sutter said. “They were here. They saw it live and they saw it in Technicolor too.”

It was one of the regional games of Fox-TV’s first day of NHL coverage.

Said Hatcher: “I’ve never stuck my knee out. I’ve been in the league four years and have never had an incident like that. I might hit and I might play rough but I would never try to end anyone’s career.”

The injury overshadowed Mike Torchia’s goaltending debut for the Stars. Torchia, recalled from the minors Saturday, made 29 saves.
