SIMI VALLEY : Planning Officials to Tackle Llama Debate

Share

Are llamas exotic beasts with no place in a residential area, or are they more like ponies, friendly and easily acclimated to suburban living?

The Simi Valley Planning Commission will tackle that question tonight at its 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall.

At issue is a young llama called Fantasia, now living with her owners in the Bridle Path neighborhood on the south side of the city.

Although horses are allowed in the area, some residents have complained that llamas spit, smell bad and frighten the horses, and therefore should be barred.

The Planning Commission in December agreed to allow llamas, but the decision was struck down by the City Council, which sent the matter back to the community for further discussion.

At least four surveys were conducted with mixed results. The commission will sort out the details tonight.
