U.S.-Japan Auto Talks to Resume: Negotiations between the two nations will begin again the week of April 17 in Washington, Commerce Undersecretary Jeffrey Garten said this week. But U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor said the talks cannot drag on. Garten said the actual dates for the talks had not been set but that they will be at the deputy level. Kantor told the Senate Finance Committee that opening Japan’s automobile and auto parts markets to more U.S. imports would help reduce the U.S. trade imbalance with Japan.
