SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 72-year-old registered sex offender and transient remains in custody at the Los Angeles County Jail after being arrested in Glendora on suspicion of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old boy last week.

Maurice Aucoin was arrested on March 28 after a witness told police she saw a young boy orally copulating him, Glendora Police Detective Robert Lamborghini said.

Aucoin had a previous conviction for oral copulation with force or fear in 1978, making him subject to a sentence of 25 years to life if found guilty, Lamborghini said.

Police spokesman Brian Summers said Aucoin had registered as a sex offender in Azusa in 1981 and had a warrant out for his arrest for urinating in public.

The 8-year-old boy was walking home from school at about 3 p.m. and apparently felt sorry for the transient, whom he frequently saw near the Alpha Beta market in the 1000 block of East Alosta Avenue, Lamborghini said.

The boy bought candy for Aucoin, police said, but the transient refused.

Instead, Aucoin allegedly offered the victim $5 to engage in sex acts with him. At first the boy refused, Lamborghini said, then agreed.

Aucoin is being held on suspicion of two counts of lewd conduct with a child under the age of 14.
