John Bray, the former national amateur heavyweight champion from Van Nuys, has been taken off Wednesday’s boxing card at the Warner Center Marriott.

John Hernandez, Bray’s trainer, said Friday the 1991 U.S. champion will spend the next month training in Big Bear and serving as sparring partner for heavyweight contender Lennox Lewis.

Bray, 13-2-1 with four knockouts since turning pro in October, 1992, will fight at the Marriott on May 10 when he is scheduled to meet King Ipitan, another young and promising heavyweight, in the 10-round main event.

“It was kind of an iffy thing from the start,” Hernandez said of Wednesday’s cancellation. “We were trying to get him a tuneup bout but it didn’t work out. We’re trying to get him in the best shape possible. This is an opportunity to get some real quality sparring in.”

Promoter Peter Broudy has replaced Bray with Derrick Jefferson, a former Golden Gloves champion from Detroit who will be making his professional debut in a four-round bout against an undetermined opponent.

Undefeated lightweight “Sugar” Shane Mosley, who has won 15 of his 16 fights by knockout, will meet Raul Hernandez of Mexico City in Wednesday’s 10-round main event. Mosley is ranked eighth by the World Boxing Council. Hernandez, 19-19-1, last year lost tough bouts against world champion Gabriel Ruelas and top contender David Kamau.
