Unrelated shootings involving suspected gang members in Santa Ana and Anaheim on Sunday left a 14-year-old boy dead and two men in critical condition, police said.

Santa Ana police said the youth was a “known Santa Ana gang member” and was allegedly shot by rival gang members in the courtyard of his apartment.

Several males entered the courtyard of the apartment complex at 502 East 6th Street where the boy was standing, police Cpl. Daniel Perales said. One member of the group fired several rounds at the youth before they fled about 10:15 p.m., Perales said.

No suspects have been arrested. Police would not identify the victim, who was struck three times with bullets from a small-caliber handgun. He died at the scene.

Also on Sunday night, Anaheim police found a 35-year-old Anaheim man who had been shot several times in an alley in the 300 block of North Bush Street about 9 p.m.

Several miles away, about 10:45 p.m., police came upon a second shooting victim, a 19-year-old Anaheim man who had been shot while driving and then crashed his car into a telephone pole near Walnut Street and Katella Avenue.

Officials suspect gang involvement in both Anaheim shootings but said the two incidents are not related. No motives or suspects have been identified.

Both Anaheim men are in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Anaheim Police Detective Steve Rodig would not release the victims’ names in order to protect them.

“We think they’re gang-related. We have to wait until those guys get out of the hospital so we can talk to them,” Rodig said.
