OC HIGH : An Alternate Route to the Diploma
The independent study program at Irvine Unified School District was created in 1981, became a self-contained school in 1988 and received accreditation in 1991 from the Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges.
As an alternative to classroom instruction, the program grants high school diplomas to students who complete all state and district graduation requirements. To attend, students under 18 must be referred by a counselor at their regular high school.
A student meets weekly with a teacher and receives academic work to be completed before the next meeting. Work is tailored to the individual. Oral and written tests are given each week to ensure that students are meeting performance objectives.
School officials say the independent study program requires self-discipline and a high degree of responsibility and is neither an easier nor quicker way to earn credits or graduate.
