Schumacher, Coulthard DQs Overturned
The Brazilian Grand Prix disqualifications of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard were reversed by the International Automobile Federation’s court of appeals Thursday, and they were restored to a 1-2 finish in the March 26 race.
However, each racing team was fined $200,000 because their fuel samples in the race did not match the samples that were tested at the start of the season. The teams will not receive championship points, but the drivers will.
After the race, the stewards disqualified Schumacher and Coulthard for the infractions, but the teams protested the decision. The samples were later found to be legal.
Gerhard Berger, who was declared the winner, was pushed back to third place.
Schumacher returned to the top of the drivers’ standings with 14 points. Damon Hill of Williams has 10.
