Compiled by Jack Searles

Businesses active in recycling and other environmental programs are invited to compete in the annual countywide WasteWatch competition.

The event recognizes companies and other organizations that are taking steps to manage wastes and other material in an environmentally responsible manner. Winners will be selected in each of the county’s participating cities.

WasteWatch recognizes efforts to save resources, reduce pollution, preserve landfill space and create markets for recyclable materials. In addition to recycling, such activities as composting, waste reduction and purchasing recycled materials will be recognized.

The program is a project of the Ventura Countywide Recycling Consortium, a group of public and private concerns and agencies. All businesses, private nonprofit groups and schools are eligible.

In Oxnard, the program is being managed by the city’s Refuse Division. The agency will make awards in six categories, including for-profit recyclers and haulers.
