Young Invited to Montana Party? Indeed, It’s Too Good to Be True

Quarterback Steve Young thought he was invited to Joe Montana’s retirement party today in San Francisco. But he definitely isn’t.

It turns out that the person who invited the 49er quarterback wasn’t Montana’s agent, Peter Johnson, but an unidentified teammate of Young’s, adding a bit of mischief to the much-ballyhooed event.

“I didn’t call Steve, it was all a hoax,” Johnson said Monday night about the quarterback whose presence led owner Eddie DeBartolo to trade Montana to Kansas City and whose relationship with Montana has been anything but cordial.

“The only ones from the 49ers I invited were Eddie, Dwight (Clark) and Carmen Policy,” Johnson said. “Joe invited a few other of his old teammates but not Steve, certainly not Steve.”

For a while, it looked like it would include Young. His agent, Leigh Steinberg, said Monday his client was invited by Johnson and had planned on attending.

Today’s tribute will be an elaborate affair, while a more low-key tribute will be held in Kansas City Wednesday.
