The Boston Red Sox signed pitcher Zane Smith, who made $3.1 million last year, to a one-year deal worth $1.3 million plus the chance to earn $300,000 more in performance bonuses.

Smith, 34, was 10-8 with a 3.27 earned-run average last year with the Pirates and 88-101 with a 3.56 ERA over an 11-year career.

Also Tuesday, Roger Clemens, bothered by a stiff shoulder, had an encouraging pain-free workout. “I’m not saying we’re out of the woods. But it’s encouraging,” Red Sox Manager Kevin Kennedy said. Kennedy said Clemens already has missed so much time that he can’t be ready for the April 26 opener at Fenway Park. Clemens has been the opening-day starter every year since 1987.

Jack Morris, who pitched the Detroit Tigers to a World Series championship and later helped Minnesota and Toronto get into the Series, announced his retirement, ending a 17-year career.

Morris, 39, said he could no longer pitch at the level he was accustomed to. He finished with a 254-186 career record and a 3.90 ERA. The Reds had signed him as a free agent.

San Diego Padre second baseman Luis Lopez has a torn ligament in his throwing elbow and could be sidelined for the season. Lopez, the projected opening-day starter, hurt his right elbow diving for a ball Friday against San Francisco.

With Lopez out, Bip Roberts will move back to second base. Roberts was the Padres’ starter at second last year but had moved to left field. Rookie Melvin Nieves will inherit much of the time in left.

The union-sponsored free agent camp in Homestead, Fla., had its first intrasquad game of the spring and a team managed by Jerry Morales beat one managed by Greg Olson, 3-0. Darryl Boston had a two-run double and Glenn Wilson an RBI single in the six-inning game. Tim Belcher, Dave Otto and Shawn Hillegas pitched two innings apiece to combine on the shutout. Former Dodger Jay Howell threw two shutout innings and struck out three for the losing team.

The Baltimore Orioles invited free agent outfielder Andy Van Slyke to their training camp for a tryout. Van Slyke, who hit .246 with the Pittsburgh Pirates last year, will play in a few exhibition games with Baltimore. The Orioles will then decide whether to offer him a contract. The Orioles reportedly offered Van Slyke, 34, a $1 million, one-year contract earlier this month. Van Slyke, who made $3.3 million last year, rejected the offer. . . . Three-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux appears to be making a faster-than-expected recovery from chicken pox for the Atlanta Braves. He will pitch in an intrasquad game Friday and could be reinstated as the opening-day pitcher. . . . Felipe Alou of the Montreal Expos and Buck Showalter of the New York Yankees, whose teams had the best records when players went on strike Aug. 11, have been chosen to manage in the All-Star game.
