SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Mug shots, crime reports and 911 calls will go high-tech in Palos Verdes Estates.

The Police Department plans to buy a $225,000 computer system to perform functions ranging from storing photos to allowing officers to e-mail City Hall.

Police now use a computer system that was purchased from the Covina Police Department nine years ago.

The bedroom community of 14,000 is relatively free of major crimes, reporting no homicides, no rapes and only one robbery last year.

But Lt. Darin K. Kasten said the new computers, expected to last at least 10 years, will make the department more efficient. For example, the department will be able to send statistics directly to state and federal agencies via computer. Now, officers must copy the information by hand onto forms.

Kasten added that buying a new system will cost the same, or less than, maintaining and upgrading the current system.
