YORBA LINDA : City Wants Trash Service on Tax Bill

Share

A garbage hauling fee may be placed on property tax bills if a proposal from the city’s trash hauler is approved.

Residents pay quarterly bills of about $40 directly to Taormina Industries, which operates as Yorba Linda Disposal, but the city wants the bills included in property tax assessments.

The move would save money, city officials said, because the cost of mailing bills and collecting fees would be reduced.

The city pays about $46,000 to Taormina Industries to bill residents.

If the county were to bill through tax rolls, it would cost about $6,000 a year.

But some residents and business owners object to the idea, first raised last year. Landlords say placing the bill on the county tax rolls will make them responsible for a bill now paid by tenants.

When the city considered placing the fee on the property tax rolls last year, a number of residents said it removed any leverage they might have over the trash company for poor service.

They questioned what would happen if they failed to pay the trash fee portion of their tax bill in the event of a dispute.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for May 2. If approved, the plan would take effect July 1.
