A cast of more than 70 students will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” at Hoover High School this weekend as part of a drive to have the school designated as a performing arts academy, officials said.

The cast for the classic musical, which will include 50 students from the high school and about 20 more from Mark Keppel Elementary School, will be joined by the Hoover student orchestra performing under the direction of the school’s music teacher, Craig Kupka.

Terry Ross, a drama teacher who will direct the production, said a plan is in the works to have Hoover become a designated state Academy for the Performing Arts, which would allow it to draw students from neighboring areas who are interested in careers in the arts, as well Glendale residents.

“An academy would have a curriculum focused on the arts and give the students the training they need for a future career in the arts,” Ross said.

Hoover teachers have already submitted a budget proposal for the academy to the Board of Education.

“The King and I” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hoover auditorium, 631 Glenwood Road, Glendale. Tickets are $5. For more information: (818) 242-6801.
