Orange County Almanac

Labels that once adorned crates of oranges grown in Orange County are now considered collectors’ items.

Orange-crate art, in fact, has a vast audience across the United States. But when the labels were first created, starting in the 1880s, the art was simply a sales tool. Orange growers and shippers wanted something that would help them be remembered by wholesalers.

The 10-by-11-inch paper labels generally were produced by print shops in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Almost none were signed, for the orange growers had no interest in making the artists’ names known.

But now the original labels of those forgotten artists sometimes sell for thousands of dollars each.
