COSTA MESA — Fire officials are investigating a blaze that gutted a house Friday in the 3100 block of Jefferson Street.
No injuries were reported, Fire Department spokeswoman Susan Wood said.
A neighbor whose bedroom window faces the house was awakened by flames about 4:20 a.m. and called 911, Wood said. Twenty-one firefighters arrived minutes later to find that the garage door had been charred and the blaze had spread to the attic, she said.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Wood said. An estimate on damages was not determined.
The owner of the house was not home, but a house-sitter heard the smoke alarm and was able to escape without injury, Wood said.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire, which they said was “suspicious in origin.” No other details were available.
