EARTHY FEELING: The 25th anniversary of Earth Day kicks off today with Valley events for hard-core and armchair environmentalists. . . . For the hard-core celebrant, there’s a 10K walk beginning at the back lot of Universal Studios, as well as a community bike ride with Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. . . . For a more relaxed celebration, visit the Earth Day event at the Agoura Meadows Shopping Center. . . . And for those who have always wanted to know about renewable energy in the Southland but were afraid to ask, there’s a way to celebrate Earth Day without even leaving your chair. Read all about it on B2.

FATAL BLAME? It was an unsettling mystery: three bodies found with fatal gunshot wounds Thursday in a Northridge home. Now police may have solved part of the mystery, but it is no less disturbing. . . . Police say the tragedy probably began when David Zipp committed suicide in front of his ex-wife, Carolyn Zipp, and their son Scott. But then, police say, mother and son started arguing over who was to blame . . . “It probably was a heated argument pointing guilt, saying ‘You did this’ and ‘You did that,’ ” said one detective (B5). “It all went downhill from there.”

HIGH HOPES: J. J. O’Laughlin hopes to hear the sound of Jets this weekend. Or Broncos. Dolphins will do, too. . . . The Cal State Northridge quarterback, above, is among the Valley hopefuls awaiting a call from an NFL team during this weekend’s draft, which begins today (C14). . . . “The Jets called me Thursday to verify my draft day phone number,” said O’Laughlin, who passed for 2,373 yards and 13 touchdowns in 1994. “It’s nice to know they may need to use that number.”

HOLY PLOT? It sounds like a movie pitch for a teen-age audience: A bunch of high school students take over a training academy for priests. . . . But Catholic sources say it’s a real-life drama: Quake-damaged Alemany High School in Mission Hills will not be rebuilt. Instead, its 1,600 students will be shipped to Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary, which is scheduled to close. . . . The Catholic archdiocese refuses to deny or confirm the move (B1).
