BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Myers Might Start--on Disabled List

Share

It appears catcher Greg Myers, who has suffered serious injuries in four of the last five years, will open the 1995 season on the disabled list again.

Myers, who broke a bone in his right big toe when he fouled a ball off his foot Thursday, was evaluated Friday by Phoenix doctor Fred Dicke, who told Manager Marcel Lachemann that the catcher would likely be out for two or three weeks.

“I still can’t believe this happened,” said Myers, who sat out 54 games last season after tearing knee cartilage in a home-plate collision. “It seems about every year something comes up and gets me. I’m hoping for some good news Monday. You never know.”

Myers, who will sit out this weekend’s exhibition series against the San Diego Padres, will be examined again Monday by team physician Lewis Yocum, but Lachemann was already making contingency plans Friday.

Lachemann said catcher Jorge Fabregas, who was optioned to triple-A Vancouver Tuesday, will rejoin the team today in San Diego and that he would likely open the season platooning Fabregas, who bats left-handed, and Andy Allanson, who bats right-handed.

Here’s a scary thought: Angel relievers Mitch Williams and Lee Smith drove from Tempe to San Diego together Friday afternoon--with Wild Thing behind the wheel.

“Say a prayer for me, I’m gonna need it,” Smith joked as the Angels broke camp in Arizona after Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage in Tempe Diablo Stadium. “I tell you one thing, I’m not gonna sleep. I’ll be watching him. If he drives on the freeway like he drives around town, we’re in trouble. How would I describe his driving? I haven’t come up with a name for it yet, but it ain’t pretty. I can’t believe it. I’m driving to San Diego with the Vile Thing.”

As if this spring hasn’t been tough enough on Angel clubhouse employees, who worked an entire spring training with replacement players, moved their operation to Anaheim in early April, pulled a few all-nighters getting it back to Arizona when the strike ended for spring training II, and now head back to Anaheim again, they were thrown another curve this week.

The team’s road jerseys arrived in Tempe Wednesday, and players tried them on Thursday. About half didn’t fit. “Usually the company measures guys over the winter, but with the strike, they didn’t do that this year,” said Ken Higdon, Angel equipment manager. “Some guys changed sizes.”

Alterations on the road jerseys were done in Arizona, but Angel home jerseys were still in the team’s clubhouse--in Anaheim Stadium. So Higdon flew to Orange County on Thursday morning, picked up the uniforms and was back in Arizona by Thursday night.

Lachemann said he was leaning toward opening the season with a starting rotation of Chuck Finley, Mark Langston, Scott Sanderson, Brian Anderson and Shawn Boskie but wouldn’t finalize the decision until meeting with pitching coach Chuck Hernandez. . . . Pitching matchups for the Angels’ series against the San Diego Padres: Finley vs. Andy Ashby today at 1 p.m. and Langston vs. Joey Hamilton Sunday at 6 p.m. in Jack Murphy Stadium; Sanderson vs. Scott Sanders Monday at 7 p.m. and Anderson vs. undecided Tuesday 1 p.m. in Anaheim Stadium.
