‘It’s All True’

This fascinating and remarkable 1993 documentary about Orson Welles’ fabled film of the same name goes a considerable way toward clearing up the mystery surrounding the aborted project. Part investigation into the film’s origins, part reconstruction of a key segment based on 309 cans of pristine nitrate footage undiscovered until 1985, the film is co-directed by Richard Wilson, a close Welles associate; Myron Meisel, and Bill Krohn. It also helps explain why Welles (pictured) apparently felt the film had an all but fatal influence on his subsequent Hollywood career. Welles’ recovered footage is filled with glorious shots and stunning compositions, but we wonder if the whole truth about “It’s All True” will ever be known (Cinemax Thursday at 11:30 a.m.).
