World IN BRIEF : JAPAN : 20 Sickened by Foul-Smelling Fumes
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Twenty people were sickened by an unidentified gas released outside a restaurant in Maebashi, 60 miles northwest of Tokyo, police said. Foul-smelling fumes filled the street outside the Chinese restaurant, and employees and customers suffered sore eyes and scratchy throats. The symptoms were similar to those in two incidents last week in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. On March 20, a nerve gas released on the capital’s subways killed 12 people.
