From Staff and Wire Reports

A 14-year-old South African runner has tested positive for steroids, making her the youngest track and field competitor to be accused of using performance-enhancing drugs.

Bernard Rose, chief executive of Athletics South Africa, said the girl’s identity would not be released because she is a minor. She has been suspended from competition pending a hearing.

The track and field body said in a weekend statement that a urine sample given by the athlete earlier this month at a national junior championship meet revealed traces of an anabolic steroid, nandrolone, and a stimulant, fencamfamine.

Athletics South Africa said it “was extremely disturbed . . . especially as the use of anabolic steroids by such young people could lead to very serious permanent and irreversible physical and psychological changes.”

The International Amateur Athletic Federation, the governing body of track and field, confirmed the girl was the youngest to test positive for steroid use.

All-state forward Saipele Tuialii of L.A. City College signed a letter of intent to attend Texas Christian, choosing the Horned Frogs over USC, North Carolina Charlotte and Hawaii.

Tuialii, the co-most valuable player of the Southern California Athletic Conference as L.A. City College (30-2) reached the state semifinals, was more comfortable with TCU’s Billy Tubbs than other coaches recruiting him, said Mike Miller, LACC coach. Tuialii decided against USC because assistant Jack Fertig is expected to leave the program. “Jack’s the one he trusted and liked,” Miller said.

Teammate Markee Brown, a guard, signed with Oregon State.

Darnell Burton, the sixth man for the University of Cincinnati, was suspended for next season for an unspecified violation of team rules.
