LONG BEACH — Long Beach State will introduce Dallas Boychuk, lead assistant women’s basketball coach for Big Ten Conference co-champion Purdue, today as its new women’s basketball coach at a 3 p.m. news conference in the Pyramid, school sources said Thursday.
Boychuk, 31, will sign a four-year contract today to replace Glenn McDonald, who was reassigned within the athletic department March 13. The contract includes a $72,000 base salary, and incentives could push the deal to as much as $110,000 annually if Boychuk earns the maximum from a shoe deal, summer camps and other factors, sources said.
Phone calls to Boychuk’s home in West Lafayette, Ind., went unanswered Thursday.
Born and raised in Westport, Conn., Boychuk was an assistant at Louisville for two years before being hired by Purdue Coach Lin Dunn. Boychuk also served as an assistant at Stetson, her alma mater, and has coached at the high school level.
Long Beach was fifth in the Big West Conference under McDonald last season, finishing 13-14, 10-8 in conference. There were only three seniors on the team.
Boychuk, a Purdue assistant for three years, interviewed with Long Beach officials on Tuesday. She was offered the position Wednesday after returning to Indiana.
Boychuk was the second person offered the job. Maine Coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie declined Long Beach’s offer April 17.
Ohio State assistant Melissa McFerrin was the other finalist. Long Beach brought McFerrin in for interviews Monday.
Boychuk, Purdue’s recruiting coordinator, has signed many of the nation’s best prep players during the last three years. Purdue’s recruiting class last season included Brea Olinda point guard Nicole Erickson--twice chosen The Times’ Orange County player of the year. Some recruiting analysts rank this season’s class No. 1 nationally.
Purdue (24-8, 13-3 in the Big Ten) shared the conference title with Penn State and advanced to the West Regional final of the NCAA tournament.
