Something’s Fishy About Them

Share

First it was bowling. Then golf. Now, it appears the latest rock ‘n’ rollers’ pastime has moved even further into uncharted regions of banality.

That’s right, fishing.

Witness a recent record industry-sponsored shindig in honor of alternative rockers All, which gathered the band and friends for a moonlight fishing escapade last week.

As if this didn’t sufficiently represent a squeaky-clean break from the sex-and-drugs era, no fish were caught so a rock ‘n’ roll Friday night was spent rolling on the high seas liberating live bait.

“I think it epitomizes how we fit into the entertainment industry,” says All drummer Bill Stevenson. “And that is, we don’t. We’re the most unglamorous band with the least image.”

No-Flaws Clause: We noticed this flyer hanging in a coffee shop that advertised a spare room in a “charming” Mount Washington house.

“Roommate must be: nonsmoker, no drugs or heavy alcohol, very few possessions, responsible, very quiet, meticulously clean, reliable income, good credit and personal references, will split household chores evenly including recycling and composting. A quality person who is interested in an ecological household, helping with draught (sic) resistant gardening of plants and vegetables, is open-minded, easy going, humorous and animal lover, is honest and friendly.”

And that’s just for the Homo sapiens.

It goes on:

“Pets: negotiable. No dogs or cats, but a small animal would be OK, just as long as it is an easygoing ‘roommate’ that can get along with our territorial cat.”

Sounds like a fun pad. Dare we ask about house plants?

‘Net Note: There’s been an ongoing argument on the Internet regarding a sampled bit of dialogue from the Beck hit song, “Loser.”

The line that goes: I’m a driver / I’m a winner / Things are gonna change / I can feel it has been mistakenly attributed by many from Rolling Stone and KROQ to a George Bush presidential campaign speech.

Much to the chagrin of director Steve Hanft, the line, in fact, comes from his ultra-indie feature called “Kill the Moonlight,” about a race car driver who’s a total loser.

To still the skeptical voices after many years of shooting and financing, Hanft (who also directed Beck’s “Loser” video) says he’s ready to release the film, which will have a midnight run at Laemmle Theaters this summer.
