NEWPORT BEACH / COSTA MESA : School District Clears the Way for Sale of Surplus Sites

Share

Two vacant properties within the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have been declared as surplus for sale and recommendations that six more properties be sold will go before the school board early in May.

A committee reviewing eight vacant or leased Newport-Mesa Unified School District properties for possible sale recommended that a total of four sites be designated as surplus, which frees the district to sell them.

Jerry King, chairman of a district committee studying surplus property, told the school board that the 16th Street administrative headquarters, on a corner of Newport Harbor High School, should be sold.

The board voted unanimously to approve committee recommendations to declare as surplus that site, along with the vacant Banning School property, at 16th and Whittier streets in Newport.

The citizen review committee also recommended that Monte Vista High School be sold. Earlier in April, the committee voted to designate Balearic School surplus because it is too small to reopen as an elementary school.

The board will discuss final decisions at its May 9 meeting.
