STANTON : Council Won’t Dissolve Planning Commission

Share

The City Council has scrapped a proposal to dissolve the Planning Commission as a cost-saving measure.

In rejecting the plan last week, council members said the five-member commission is vital to the city’s development.

“I like having another set of eyeballs looking at issues in depth,” Councilman Brian Donahue said. “I think it is good for the city.”

Mayor Harry Dotson said the city would run the risk of lawsuits if the council took over the commission’s responsibilities.

“If a developer or someone disputes a decision made by the Planning Commission, they take it to the council,” he said. “If it comes to the council in the first place and there is a disagreement, the second place is the courts.”

City Atty. Thomas Allen added, “It is possible that the reason that few planning decisions have gone to court is because the council acted as a buffer against that.”
