INGLEWOOD : HIV Testing at City Jail Allowed to Continue

Share

HIV testing of inmates in the city jail will continue, the City Council decided this week.

The council voted Tuesday to allow police officers, jail employees and inmates to request testing for the virus that causes AIDS if they fear exposure to a suspect’s blood or other body fluids.

A state law that permitted testing prisoners for the virus expired in July. The state penal code allows cities and counties to adopt a resolution to continue testing, said City Atty. Howard Rosten.

Inglewood Police Chief Oliver M. Thompson said in about five cases in three years, suspects have been tested for HIV at the request of a police officer. Amy Brown, who manages the city jail, said she was not aware of any testing done at the request of jail employees or inmates.
