DIAMOND BAR: A 51-year-old La Puente man was killed and two people were seriously injured in a crash on the Pomona (60) Freeway early Monday morning. Meleodoro Salazar died at the scene of the accident, California Highway Patrol officers said. Salazar was the front passenger in a Toyota truck driven by his son, Jose Luis Covarrubias, 28, of La Puente. The truck crashed into the back of a stalled big rig, authorities said. Covarrubias was injured, as was passenger Leonel Puentes, 26, of South El Monte. Both were taken to San Dimas Community Hospital. Covarrubias was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

EL MONTE: A 56-year-old El Monte man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of killing his nephew with a broken beer bottle. Rafael Martel Trundle is being held without bail in the El Monte City Jail on suspicion of killing Henry Madrid, 17, who was stabbed in the stomach Saturday afternoon. Madrid was stabbed at the home he shared with Trundle and other family members in the 4700 block of Peck Road at about 3:40 p.m. Saturday, sheriff deputies said. The deputies said Trundle and Madrid had been arguing over an unspecified family matter.

POMONA: Police operating a sobriety checkpoint arrested 15 people on suspicion of driving under the influence. The checkpoint was set up in the 1400 block of South Garey Avenue, and police said about 1,000 cars passed through it between 8 p.m. Friday and 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

SOUTH PASADENA: Juan Perez, a 26-year-old busboy, was robbed and shot on his way home from work Sunday morning, police said. He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. Perez was walking from Shakers restaurant in the 600 block of Fair Oaks Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. when he was confronted by an armed man who demanded his wallet, police said. Perez complied, then was shot in the chest.
