COMPTON : Assemblyman Gives Up on State Prison Plan
Assemblyman Willard H. Murray Jr. (D-Paramount) publicly threw in the towel this week on his efforts to see a state prison built in Compton.
Murray conceded that his efforts to place a prison in the city were “fruitless” after Compton voters overwhelmingly rejected an advisory ballot measure on the issue.
Murray announced plans to drop his prison-building campaign in a letter Monday to Compton Mayor Omar Bradley and the City Council, all of whom had opposed the idea. He noted that Gov. Pete Wilson and the Department of Corrections have a policy against placing prisons in communities that oppose them.
Murray has announced he will run next year for the congressional seat currently held by Rep. Walter R. Tucker III (D-Compton), who is under federal indictment on allegations he solicited bribes while mayor of Compton in 1992.
Murray, who is serving his fourth term in the Assembly, will have to relinquish his seat because of voter-mandated term limits.
