‘C’ FOR CSUN: The CSUN student newspaper polled students for a “report card”--grading the university on Academic Reputation, Social Atmosphere and Career Preparation--and this week awarded the school a tepid “C-plus” average. . . . CSUN spokesman Bruce Erickson, noting the school’s heavy hits from the recession and the 1994 quake, responded: “I think, in the context, I would have given several more A’s.”

BELOW AVERAGE? But maybe the survey is on target. CSUN athletic officials are having a hard time attracting a candidate for the vacant football coaching job, even though Cal State jobs usually are quite prestigious. . . . Candidates, including Valley College Coach Jim Fenwick, have to consider a losing team, waning community support, poor facilities and dwindling funds. (C11)

PRAYER DAY: Red Cross chief and first lady hopeful Elizabeth Dole, above, is keynote speaker today at the Valley’s National Day of Prayer celebration at the Los Angeles Baptist Auditorium in North Hills. . . . Dole, the wife of Senate majority leader and presidential candidate Bob Dole, will speak about the role of God in our national life at the 7 a.m. breakfast and 10 a.m. brunch.

DELAYED REACTION: Hospital officials unveiled a portrait of County Supervisor Mike Antonovich at Olive View Medical Center on Wednesday, honoring him for his help in rebuilding the facility after the earthquake--the 1971 Sylmar earthquake, that is. . . . Maybe in 2018 they’ll be unveiling Antonovich’s likeness over the Golden State and Antelope Valley freeways, damaged in his district in the 1994 quake.

SCALED BACK: Residents complaining about plans for Woodland Hills Estates, a proposed subdivision in the Santa Monica Mountains, got a break Wednesday. City Councilman Marvin Braude cast aside developer complaints of unfair treatment and sent a scaled-down proposal to a committee for analysis. (B4)
