BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Langston Would Void Any Trade

Share

Rumors that the Angels will trade a high-salaried left-hander persist, but now they’ve expanded to include Mark Langston as well as Chuck Finley.

A New York newspaper reported Wednesday that the Yankees are interested in Langston, who started Wednesday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics, and the Cleveland Indians are said to be interested in Langston and Finley.

But Langston, who is signed through 1997, won’t be going anywhere. As a player with at least 10 years of major league service, and five with the same team, he has the right to veto any trade.

“I have no desire to leave at all--I would void any deal,” Langston said. “They might be pursuing it. Maybe they’re just seeing what’s out there. But it won’t go very far.”

Langston doesn’t understand why the Angels would even talk to other clubs about one of their top pitchers.

“Why would you sign Lee Smith if you didn’t think you were going to win?” Langston said. “You don’t trade Chuck Finley if you think you’re going to win.”

The Angels are expected to release veteran pitcher Joe Magrane today, swallowing his $1.5-million guaranteed contract for 1995. The Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres have expressed interest in the injury-plagued Magrane.

A team that signs Magrane would only have to pay him the major league minimum $109,000, and the Angels would pay the balance.

In addition, the Angels will pay Magrane $500,000 to buy out his 1996 contract (he would have earned another $1.5 million), making his 1993 signing the team’s most costly mistake since the Angels paid former third baseman Gary Gaetti $6 million--to play for the Kansas City Royals--in 1993 and ’94.

Catcher Greg Myers, on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken bone in his right big toe, was given clearance Wednesday to begin catching. Manager Marcel Lachemann said he expects Myers to return to the lineup Saturday. . . . Finley, Shawn Boskie, Jorge Fabregas and Garret Anderson will sign autographs from 5:30-6:15 p.m. today outside Anaheim Stadium Gates 1,3,4 and 9.
