VAN NUYS : Head Start Celebrates Opening of Center

Head Start, now in its 30th year of helping low-income families with children’s support services ranging from health programs to recreational activities, marked its grand opening in Van Nuys on Friday in partnership with Child Care Resource Center.

About 100 people attended the event, which was more of an open house than a true opening for the site in the 5900 block of Woodman Avenue. The center has been operating since late March, with about 150 children participating in its various programs.

Several youngsters played on the property’s playground equipment that includes plastic slides, a huge sandbox and a boat-shaped set of monkey bars, while adults browsed through its five classrooms.

Head Start is a free preschool program for low-income families and is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Child Care Resource Center is a private, regional nonprofit organization that has focused on child care issues since 1976.

Officials from both agencies were happy with the partnership.

“There’s an African saying that goes ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ ” said JoEllen Tullis, the center’s program director, moments before cutting a ceremonial ribbon.
