Philippines Fires Second Official Over Maid Case
In a bid to help his candidates in Monday’s election, President Fidel Ramos said Saturday he would replace his labor secretary because of her handling of the case of a Philippine maid hanged in Singapore.
Public outcry over the government’s failure to prevent the March 17 hanging of Flor Contemplacion is believed to have lessened election chances of Ramos’ candidates. Millions of Filipinos believe she was framed and that the government failed to defend her rights.
Ramos said Labor Secretary Nieves Confesor would step down June 30 when her term as chairwoman of the governing board of the International Labor Organization expires.
