This year’s heavy rains might have reminded some longtime residents of 1938, when a series of powerful winter storms caused havoc across the county.

The heaviest storms that year pounded the county from Feb. 27 through March 3. The Santa Ana River overflowed, flooding lowland areas around Fountain Valley and Garden Grove.

The water washed away or damaged beyond use almost all vehicle bridges in the county, according to the book “One Hundred Years of Yesterdays.”

Hoping to avoid such damage again, officials built the Prado Dam in Santa Ana Canyon.
