The Florida Marlins met Cincinnati Red pitcher Kevin Jarvis on Wednesday night and came away both impressed and beaten, 3-0.

That they played host to the game might have had something to do with both. The Marlins are 0-7 at Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium, and Loss No. 7 was the most impressive of all. Jarvis pitched a two-hit shutout, the major leagues’ first complete game of the season, and matched Florida’s offensive output with two hits of his own.

It was the first complete game of his career and his second major league victory, coming on his ninth appearance.

“He was just a name. Other than that, none of us had heard of him,” said Greg Colbrunn, who had one of the two hits. Gary Sheffield had the other.

“I doubt any of us had faced him,” Colbrunn said.

John Burkett (2-2) took the loss.

“We’re going through some tough times,” Florida Manager Rene Lachemann said. “Mr. Jarvis was quite impressive. He had good movement on the ball and good control.”

He also had Manager Davey Johnson on the edge of his seat in the ninth inning, with two out and Sheffield aboard after a single. But Jarvis retired Jeff Conine on a fly ball to end the game.

“That would have been a tough hook,” Johnson said. “I’ll say this: How’s that for a great-pitched game?”

And a great-hit one too. Jarvis triggered a three-run sixth inning by leading off with a single and scoring on Deion Sanders’ triple.

Philadelphia 10, Montreal 1--Rookie Tyler Green pitched six shutout innings and Darren Daulton had a homer and four RBIs at Philadelphia for the Phillies, who won their seventh game in a row.

Green (2-1) struck out six and gave up only three hits in winning his second consecutive outing. Philadelphia had 14 hits, after getting 15 hits Tuesday.

Daulton and Tony Longmire were four for five and Jim Eisenreich went three for five.

The Phillies took a 4-0 lead against Gil Heredia (1-2) when four batters in a row reached base to open the second inning, beginning with Dave Hollins being safe on an error and continuing with Daulton, Eisenreich and Charlie Hayes hitting first-pitch singles. All scored.

St. Louis 11, Chicago 1--Todd Zeile homered twice in his first start of the season and Ken Hill (2-0) worked eight strong innings for the Cardinals, who avoided a three-game sweep and handed the Cubs only their second road loss in eight games.

Ray Lankford also homered against Chicago starter Kevin Foster (2-1), who lasted 3 2/3 innings and gave up five runs and six hits. Bernard Gilkey drove in four runs with a two-run double and a two-run single.

New York 5, Atlanta 2--Jose Vizcaino hit a broken-bat, bases-loaded single for two runs batted in during a four-run eighth inning at New York as the Mets ended a three-game losing streak.

Mark Wohlers (0-1), the third of four Brave pitchers, started the eighth inning by striking out Bobby Bonilla, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first. Todd Hundley followed with a walk and Carl Everett had a bunt single to load the bases.

Pinch-hitter Joe Orsulak walked, forcing in Bonilla for a 2-2 tie, and Steve Bedrosian then replaced Wohlers and gave up the hit to Vizcaino. After pinch-hitter David Segui sacrificed, Brett Butler’s single scored the final run.

Colorado 8, San Francisco 5--Joe Girardi had another great Wednesday, going four for four, including a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning at Denver.

In three games played on Wednesdays this season, Girardi is 12 for 16 with nine RBIs and three four-hit games. He is 11 for 38 on the other six days of the week.

Larry Walker and Jason Bates added two-run homers for the Rockies, who have the second-best record in the league.

San Francisco’s Matt Williams, the defending NL home run champion, hit his sixth of the year, a solo shot that tied him for the major league lead.

Houston at Pittsburgh--The game was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Pittsburgh on Aug. 4.
