HUNTINGTON BEACH : Schools to Seek Funds for 2 Federal Programs

Endorsing a federal plan for better education, trustees of the Huntington Beach Union High School District voted to pursue the National Education Goals and the Goals 2000 programs.

The programs, begun by former President George Bush, call for school systems to attempt several improvements, including greater participation of the public.

The school board voted Tuesday to seek federal funding for the programs. A consultant, Gail Wayne, said the district could get about $65,000.

“The ultimate goal (of the programs) is improvement in academic achievement,” Wayne said. “Another goal is to make U.S. students first in the world in math and science.”

The district governs all the public high schools in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.
