BRIDGING EAST AND WEST: Japanese Ceramics from the Kozan Studio by Kathleen Emerson-Dell (University of Washington Press: $17.50; 64 pp., paperback original). Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916) and his son (Kozan II) were important innovators in modern Japanese pottery. Working from records that survived the destruction of the studio in 1945, Emerson-Dell describes how the Kozans employed new glazes and techniques to mimic the misty effects of traditional ink painting, and set smooth decorations against rough stoneware surfaces.
