Confused over what’s really go ing on with the ex-Beatles these days?

Don’t feel alone.

Depending on which report you’ve read, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are recording anywhere from three to five new songs, “finishing” home recordings made by John Lennon in the late ‘70s, merely recording “incidental music” for an upcoming 10-hour Beatles video documentary, or working on an album.

Here are the facts:

* The remaining Beatles have “finished” two incomplete Lennon demo recordings, which will be released this fall as part of a six-CD package of unreleased Beatles recordings spanning the group’s career. The two songs, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” feature the ex-Beatles reunited with Lennon via studio wizardry, and will be issued under the name the Beatles.

* The three are in possession of at least two other Lennon home demos--including “Grow Old With Me,” which was released on the Lennon-Yoko Ono LP “Milk and Honey”--given to them along with “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love” last year by Ono. Whether they intend to “finish” these Lennon efforts is unknown.

* The six-CD package of unreleased material--leftover songs, alternate versions, rehearsal tapes, home and concert recordings--is still in the planning stages, with the three ex-Beatles currently considering original Beatles producer George Martin’s recommended lineup.

* The three have been filmed jamming on oldies for the upcoming, officially authorized Beatles video documentary, “The Beatles Anthology,” but there are no plans to release these sessions on CD.

As reported in The Times last year, “Free as a Bird” was recorded in February, 1994, mostly at McCartney’s home studio in Sussex. They wrote additional lyrics and a chorus and added harmonies and full instrumentation to Lennon’s voice. “Free as a Bird” is a celebration of home life reportedly inspired by Lennon’s winning legal U.S. residency in the mid-’70s following government efforts to deport him on a marijuana possession charge.

“Real Love” was recorded several times at home by Lennon in the late ‘70s. One version was technically enhanced and released by Ono on the “Imagine: John Lennon” motion picture soundtrack, then was later included on the “Lennon” box set under the title “Girls and Boys.”

The demo that the three ex-Beatles finished in the February, 1995 sessions at McCartney’s studio is lyrically different from the version on “Imagine: John Lennon,” according to a report in Beatlefan magazine, an Atlanta publication long relied on by fans of the group for accurate reporting.
