Annual Sale at Huntington Gardens

Share

The Huntington Botanical Gardens’ 21st annual plant sale, known for it’s variety of plants and good prices, will be held next Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be old and new roses, herbs, unusual shrubs, trees and vines, bamboos, bromeliads, bulbs, orchids, tropicals and some fascinating succulents.

Look for several unusual everlastings, 16 kinds of sunflowers, 15 basils--from cinnamon to ‘Perfume Genoese’--plus perennials.

Fascinating succulents to look for are the John Catlin hybrid aeoniums, such as the deep purple-foliaged ‘Plum Purdy’ and the small Bleck aloe hybrids. Among the cactus, look for the new Gymnocalycium denudatum ‘Pink Beauty.’

The plant sale catalogue, which describes many of plants sold at Huntington sales, is a valuable reference and costs $3.50 at the sale.

For the children there will be garden puppet shows and a chance to sow unknown seeds, which, after they sprout, children can identify from a descriptive sheet.

Children get the best bargains. After 2 p.m. each 12-year-old or under can get a plant free in the children’s corner.

The Huntington Botanical Gardens is at 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, (818) 405-2141. There is a suggested donation to the gardens, which includes the sale, of $7.50 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for students and children.
