STANTON : City to Arbitrate Dispute Over Rental Property
The Planning Commission on Wednesday will try to resolve a dispute between American Legion Post 783 and the owner of property that the organization wants to lease for its headquarters.
Post 783 decided last summer that it could no longer afford the $9,700 monthly rent it was paying at a location on Beach Boulevard and began to search for less expensive space. The organization signed a statement that it intended to lease a site that Dilip Parikh owns in a strip shopping center at Magnolia Street and Cerritos Avenue.
Since then, Mayor Harry Dotson said, “they have been bickering back and forth.”
Before granting a conditional-use permit for the property, the Planning Commission requested that Parikh make a number of improvements to the property, including lining off parking spaces and adding outdoor lighting and landscaping.
He refused to do so, but American Legion members volunteered to make the repairs themselves. Now that the work is completed, city officials said, the landlord wants to back out of the deal.
“We are going to discuss this with all the affected parties,” Planning Manager Mark Lloyd said Monday.
Said Dotson: “Nobody can understand why he does not want them to move in.”
