CALL ANY TIME: The Los Angeles Philharmonic had a quick response when noted Russian conductor Valery Gergiev was forced to cancel the first week of his appearance with the orchestra: Carl St. Clair of Orange County’s Pacific Symphony was asked to fill in. . . . Says St. Clair, who makes his debut with the Philharmonic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday: “It’s wonderful to work with an orchestra of this high quality, no matter the circumstances.”

TIME OUT? “Staminacs” are not to be confused with workaholics (E1). The difference, doctors say, is that staminacs have stamina that allows them incredibly full, well-organized days. . . . Like Dana Eggerts, 45, of Balboa Island. Mother of two, she runs her own design firm, rises at 5:30 a.m. daily to walk three miles, reads voraciously--all on six hours’ sleep. Even an Ireland vacation this summer won’t slow her down--it’s a bicycle trip. . . . Says Eggerts: “I’m doing it with my daughter. It’s seven days, 50 miles a day.”

GOOD-LUCK CLUB: Asian culture, says Catherine Yee Schwartz of Newport Beach, encourages women to suppress their feelings. But she’s trying to change that. . . . Her new group--Joy Luck Support Group--meets weekly in Newport Beach to discuss family traditions, work and life. . . . Says Schwartz, a family therapist: “In the Asian culture, there’s so much emphasis on succeeding and so much pressure to not talk about problems.” . . . And yes, she named the group after being impressed with Amy Tan’s book “The Joy Luck Club.”

OUT OF GAS: Anaheim’s two public golf courses--Dad Miller and Anaheim Hills--soon will be a little quieter. The city is trading in its 142 gas-powered golf carts for electric ones. The new fleet should be ready next month. . . . Most golf courses already have them. Golfers usually complain the gas-powered carts are noisy and spew fumes. . . . But city officials see another advantage: The new ones will save about $20,000 a year in leasing and fuel costs.
