The 48th annual Cannes Film Festival opens its 11-day run on Wednesday with a jury chaired by the French actress Jeanne Moreau considering 24 films for the coveted Golden Palm.

Although American and British films have been rare at the festival in recent years, they account for 10 of the movies in competition this year. And Disney, Columbia and Fox each have a film in the running.

Among the films hoping to repeat the surprise victory of “Pulp Fiction,” which won a Golden Palm last year at the Mediterranean resort city and was nominated for an American Oscar as Best Film, are “Ed Wood,” by Tim Burton, “Jefferson in Paris,” by James Ivory and “Kids,” by Larry Clark, in its world premiere.

The 10-member jury includes South African novelist Nadine Gordimer, American director John Waters, Burkina Faso director Gaston Kabore, Russian screenwriter Maria Zvereva and Mexican critic Emilio Garcia Riera.
