Ocean Tests
* Re “Panel Delays Action on Ocean Tests,” May 11: Bless The Times for keeping us alert to this cliffhanger.
First the Pentagon offered Scripps $35 million of our money ostensibly to test whether it’s possible to “detect tiny changes in ocean temperatures within a decade.” Now Scripps offers to start “with a six-month, $4.5 million study” of how whales and seals respond when tortured by enormous underwater bursts of sound--subaqueous roars that carry all the way from California to New Zealand.
Is this a human response to the songs of the whales?
