Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : 11 Still Hospitalized From 2 Unrelated Fatal Accidents

Eleven people, including two in critical condition, remained hospitalized Tuesday following a pair of unrelated car accidents in the Antelope Valley that also killed four people.

Scott Allen Starkey, 24, and his 2-year-old daughter, Kayla, remained hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries a day after a car accident that left 4-year-old Christopher Starkey dead.

The accident occurred Monday when Starkey failed to yield at a Lancaster intersection and his truck was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by Ricardo Renteria. Renteria remains hospitalized, his condition listed as fair to good. Both families live in Rosamond.

In the more deadly of the two accidents, three people died and 10 others were injured when two vehicles collided head-on early Monday on California 138 near 160th Street East. Eight victims of that crash remained hospitalized Tuesday in fair or stable condition.

Thirteen relatives were returning to the San Fernando Valley from a family gathering in Las Vegas when their truck smashed into a car that was being driven the wrong way.

The accident killed Hilario Mata Hernandez, 31, and his 16-year-old niece, Norma Flores, both of Panorama City, and the driver of the wrong-way car, Michael Parra, 21, of Riverside.

North Hills resident Fernando Marquez Acosta, 29, was in stable condition Tuesday. His children, Yanery, 8, suffered spinal injuries and was in fair condition and Fernando, 4, was in good condition with a broken leg.

Hernandez’s sister, Maria Mata, 45, also was in stable condition Tuesday. Her 12-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was in fair condition with spinal injuries and a rib fracture.

Hernandez’s wife, Maria Elena Mata, 27, also was in stable condition although their two children remained in serious condition. Miriam, 9, suffered a back injury and 5-year-old Edgar’s pelvis was fractured in the collision.
